Moving to a new country is always an adventure, new places to explore, people to meet, experiences to make. Unfortunately there can be a dark side to every move, people you leave behind, feeling of isolation, fear of the unknown.

This group is for people who in their lives abroad take with them, amongst their suitcases full of dreams, little bags of uncomfortable feelings.

Barbaraexpat, a professional counsellor specialised in migrants/expats issues, runs the  group.

The meetings are held monthly on the third Thursday of the month.

In the words of one of the participants, Patrizia, “It feels good to talk!”. This is the purpose of our group, a place where we can share our expat experiences, to try and lighten the unforseen baggage that we sometimes take with us.

These are some of the topics that we have discussed and some of the topics that we are planning to explore :

  • Loneliness and isolation
  • Ageing parents far away
  • Changes and evolution of our relationship with family back home
  • Anger and resentment towards our partner
  • Motherhood abroad
  • Anxiety about the future
  • Difficulties in keeping our professional identity
  • Loss of identity and independence

Due to the broadness of some of the topics, we will consider expanding the discussion over different sessions, taking into consideration particular issues that will come up during the meeting.

If you have a topic you are interested in bringing to the group, we will be very happy to add it to the list.

Since our participants so far have been only Italian, the discussion will be in Italian. However, should more people from other nationalities be interested in participating, we’ll be happy to run one or more sessions in English.

Expatclic provides the software to make our get-together successful. We wait for you!
