This year, Granny Aupair is celebrating its 15th anniversary. We are happy to dedicate an article to celebrate its activities that make it possible for mature women to leave as au-pairs all over the world.
Founded 15 years ago by German Michela Hansen, Granny Aupair is an agency that allows women to leave as au-pairs even if they are no longer young. The fundamental idea is that mature women are still perfectly capable of caring for children, as well as older people, and that they still have the desire – perhaps even more so – to explore the world and cultivate human relationships.
I was an au-pair in England when I was 18, and after that enriching experience, I’ve always thought it a great shame that this field – like many others, after all – is reserved only for the younger part of humanity. In reality, now that I have already passed sixty, I would approach the experience of integrating into a family in a more mature, aware, and prepared manner. Not to mention that having raised two children, I am very familiar with little ones.
Granny Aupair started from this idea: why can’t a woman further along in years leave as an au-pair? It began connecting mature women eager to give some of their time in exchange for food and lodging as a basis for discovering new places, with families all over the world. The experiences multiplied, and the stories of these fantastic au-pair grannies are charming. You can read one here, or also listen (if you understand Italian) to the episode of our podcast Sconfinate, Storie di altri mondi, where German Monika, who left as an au-pair granny in Italy, loved our country so much that she bought a house and decided to settle here permanently. And she is certainly not the only one who has chosen to change her life and country after an au-pair experience.
Over the years, Granny Aupair has indeed become increasingly international. The women who want to leave as au-pairs are no longer exclusively German, and the destinations where the families hosting them are located are truly scattered all over the world.
Leaving as an au-pair even in mature age is a fantastic opportunity to discover new places while feeling safe, with a solid base and surrounded by people with whom a solid relationship of trust is built. And often it is precisely when we are older that our choices are more conscious and considered, reducing the risk of premature returns or failure of the experience. Granny Aupair has now established itself as THE agency to turn to for embarking on this beautiful adventure, and we are truly pleased to extend our best wishes for long life and many more years of extremely important activity!
